Eli and Edythe Broad Give $1 Million to Pitzer College for Anniversary Campaign, Funds to Support Scholarships
CLAREMONT, CALIF., May 2, 2014—Philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad have given $1 million to Pitzer College as part of its 50th Anniversary Campaign. The funds will support an endowed financial aid scholarship named after the couple.
The Eli and Edythe Broad Endowed Scholarship, which was established in 1994, supports at least three Pitzer students each year who are in good academic standing and have demonstrated financial need. The gift is part of Pitzer’s 50Forward fundraising campaign, which concludes Saturday, May 3 during Pitzer’s 50th Anniversary celebration, The Orange and White Ball.
“We continue to be impressed with Pitzer College President Laura Skandera Trombley’s leadership as she builds on Pitzer’s history and ensures a thriving future,” said Eli Broad, founder of The Broad Foundations. “We are delighted to support the College on its 50th anniversary.”
The Broads have been supporters of Pitzer College for nearly four decades and have given more than $11.3 million to the College. In addition to the endowed scholarship, the Eli and Edythe Broad Center and Broad Hall on campus are named in their honor.
“On behalf of Pitzer, I’d like to express our deep gratitude to Eli and Edythe Broad for their lasting friendship and support of the College, its students and its mission,” said Pitzer President Laura Skandera Trombley. “For nearly 40 years, their support has changed the lives of our students and the face of our campus. With this gift, the Broads will help another generation of Pitzer students realize their educational dreams.”
Eli Broad is an emeritus trustee of Pitzer College and the founder of two Fortune 500 companies. He served on the Pitzer College board from 1970 to 1982 and was chairman of the board from July 1973 to June 1979. In November 2012, Pitzer College launched its 50th Anniversary 50Forward Campaign, which aimed to raise $50 million to expand student aid, strengthen academic programs, improve critical facilities and increase annual support and alumni participation.
The Broad Foundations were established by entrepreneur and philanthropist Eli Broad and his wife Edythe to advance entrepreneurship for the public good in education, science and the arts. The Broad Foundations, which include The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation and The Broad Art Foundation, have assets of $2.7 billion.
