In June 2003, in an unprecedented partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and Whitehead Institute, The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation announced the $100 million founding gift—later increased to $600 million—to create The Eli and Edythe Broad Institute for Biomedical Research.
