As founding chairman of the Museum of Contemporary Art in 1979, Eli Broad was a critical leader in creating MOCA, from raising the funds to build and endow an architecturally significant museum by Arata Isozaki to negotiating the purchase of one of the world’s premiere groupings of modern and contemporary art, which form the cornerstone of the institution’s permanent collection. The Broad Foundation stepped in with $30 million to rescue MOCA in 2008 when it faced a financial crisis, reinvigorating the city’s longstanding contemporary arts institution and The Broad’s Grand Avenue neighbor.
