Eli and Edythe Broad to Receive 2018 AFA Cultural Leadership Award

NEW YORK, May 1, 2018—The American Federation of Arts (AFA) is delighted to announce that collectors and philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad will receive this year’s AFA Cultural Leadership Award. The distinction will be presented at the AFA’s annual gala on November 8, 2018 in New York City. The artist who will be honored alongside the Broads will be announced in the coming weeks.

“The Broads have a long and outstanding record of philanthropy, including projects that support education, science and art. Their generosity and care for our society’s well-being is truly palpable,” said AFA Director and CEO Pauline Willis.

With the goal of increasing public access to contemporary art—a mission that is very similar to the AFA’s founding principle—over the past 34 years, the Broad Art Foundation has made over 8,500 loans to over 500 museums. Additionally, The Broad, an art museum that opened in 2015 in Los Angeles and houses one of the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art worldwide, has welcomed over 2 million visitors.

The AFA Cultural Leadership Awards are given annually to an artist and museum leader or philanthropist in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the art community. Previous recipients have included: Alice Walton, Charles and Valerie Diker, Kehinde Wiley, Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz, Marina Abramović, Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Frank Gehry, Roy Neuberger, Sarah Sze, and Eugene V. Thaw.
